the great dismal swamp spans area of southeastern virginia , northeastern north carolina between james river near norfolk, virginia, , albemarle sound near edenton, north carolina. swamp estimated have been on 1 million acres (4,000 km), human encroachment has destroyed 90% of swampland. today, great dismal swamp national wildlife refuge on 112 thousand acres (450 km).
