sault ste. marie served highway 17, segment of trans-canada highway in region. highway connects city thunder bay northwest , sudbury east. international bridge connects downtown sault ste. marie sault ste. marie, michigan, becoming interstate 75 on american side. interstate 75 continues south saginaw, flint, , detroit before crossing ohio, terminating in hialeah, florida, near miami.


the international bridge directs traffic american side of border via sault ste. marie s new transport route runs bridge second line. new limited-access roadway, known carmen s way after late mp carmen provenzano, make easier transport trucks reach main roads. route of carmen s way has wide grassy right-of-way on both sides of roadway, facilitate future expansion of lane capacity. planning underway connect second line east new four-lane section of highway 17 opened east of city.


the city plays inherited role in marine transportation, locks in michigan being integral component of st. lawrence seaway. city operates own small-scale lock used small boats , other pleasure craft in summer. opened multi-modal terminal designed take advantage of sault rail, road, , water transportation hub.


sault ste. marie served sault ste. marie airport , sault transit services. city no longer connected passenger rail other major cities, part of algoma central railway network, runs north city small town of hearst. in 2006 city s member of parliament, tony martin, called passenger rail service reinstated between sault ste. marie , sudbury.
