on 22 october 2009, griffin took part in bbc s topical debate programme, question time, representative of bnp. appeared alongside bonnie greer, jack straw, baroness warsi , chris huhne. challenged members of studio audience, , questioned host david dimbleby on comments had made on holocaust. critical of islam. invitation followed election of 2 bnp meps european parliament, , led significant debate on merits of bbc s decision. appearance sparked protest outside bbc television centre prior recording of programme, in estimated 500 people picketed front entrance of complex, many chanting anti-nazi slogans , others trying break building stop programme being filmed. got past police , security, expelled. 6 protesters arrested, , 3 police officers injured, 1 needing hospital treatment.

the programme watched estimated 8.2 million viewers, more 3 times average figure question time, , on comparable level prime time entertainment shows. griffin s appearance dominated following day s media; follow-up report in new york times said reading many of britain s major newspapers mr. griffin lost heavily on points.
in press conference held on 23 october, griffin stated make formal complaint format of programme, said ... not genuine question time; lynch mob . suggested should appear again, ... [we] should properly, , talk issues of day , , added: audience taken city no longer british ... not country more. why not come down , in thurrock, in stoke, in burnley? somewhere there still significant numbers of english , british people, , haven t been ethnically cleansed own country.
