born family of notable musicians in old benatek (today benátky nad jizerou), bohemia, studied @ piarist gymnasium (grammar school) in kosmanos , @ jesuit gymnasium in gitschin 1735 1742. benda 19 when frederick great bestowed upon him in 1741 position of second violinist in chapel of berlin. following year benda summoned potsdam composer , arranger older brother franz, himself illustrious composer , violinist. 7 years later, in 1749, entered service of duke of gotha kapellmeister, cultivated talents composition, specializing in religious music.


a stipend duke allowed benda take study trip italy in 1764. returned gotha in 1766, , devoted himself composition. in all, wrote ten operas, several operettas, , melodramas ariadne auf naxos, medea , almansor und nadine. in 1778 resigned position , visited hamburg, vienna, , other cities, , settled @ little hamlet of köstritz.



benda s important contribution lies in development of german melodramas, form of musical stage entertainment influenced mozart. in 1774, swiss-born director abel seyler s theatrical company arrived in gotha, , seyler commissioned benda write several successful melodramas, including ariadne auf naxos, medea , pygmalion. ariadne auf naxos considered best work. @ debut in 1775, opera received enthusiastic reviews in germany , afterwards, in whole of europe, music critics calling attention originality, sweetness, , ingenious execution. besides wrote many instrumental pieces including many sinfonias, keyboard sonatas, keyboard concertos, violin concertos , smaller number of trio sonatas, violin sonatas , flute sonatas.


benda wrote music masonic rituals.


benda died in köstritz, in saxe-gotha-altenburg, @ age of 73, leaving son, friedrich ludwig benda (1752–1796), briefly carried on family musical tradition, serving music director in hamburg , later in mecklenburg, before becoming concertmaster in königsberg. died less year after father.
