history

the 1890s period of intense industrial unrest in australia: squatters , shippers, manufacturers, merchants , miners had been doing nicely in 1880s exports booming, little seemed shearers, labourers , sailors trickling down them. around 1885 demand slackened off , falling prices, employers felt need reduce labour force, , cut wages of remained. maritime labour council (mlc) formed in adelaide in 1886 , following year raised maritime strike fund of ₤9,600, of various workers unions subscribed around half. when united trades , labor council needed money start workers newspaper, port adelaide seamen s union quick assist interest-free loan.


the weekly herald

a predecessor of herald our commonwealth a. w. rayment , ignatius singer wrote articles on single tax. another, though later derided, voice edited j(ohn) medway day (1838–1905) in 1892 single tax league. labor party organisers d. williams, john abel mcpherson, henry , brother george h. buttery, , others, founded cooperative printing , publishing company of s.a. limited, 30,000 shares of 10s., , merged voice company. weekly herald founded in october 1894, edited geoff burgoyne, later leader writer sir winthrop hackett s west australian.

william wedd (9 january 1845 – 10 february 1922) first editor, geoffrey burgoyne associate editor. first few weeks issues printed register, own presses had teething problems. wedd forced ill-health retire after year or two, continued contribute, epsilon , remus , herald , other newspapers. burgoyne, son of t. burgoyne m.p., later west australian, in 1924 founding editor of hobart news, daughter publication of adelaide news. in 1940 managing editor of perth news.

harry kneebone returned editor s chair in 1916, paper in decline. in 1910 paper had 12 pages , cover price 1d.; 1924 had 4 pages 1½d , although advertiser same price boasted 16 pages. perceived poorer value resulted in decreased circulation , reduced advertising revenue, , paper s financial position, shaky, became dire. meeting of shareholders 23 june 1924 decided on immediate voluntary liquidation.

between 9 march 1918 , 1 february 1919 herald ran weekly feature, instalments 1–35 bylined laradale (william w. goddard), based on interviews with, , unpublished memoirs of, seth master ferry, major figure of adelaide turf scene 50 years.


chapters #36 not attributed, , may have been written ferry himself, , series ended peremptorily @ #46 no explanation. goddard sued co-operative printing , publishing company, publishers of daily herald withholding part of wages. goddard s accounts of details of contract refuted herald.
