st john baptist church 1 of oldest churches in area, , noted in domesday book in 1086. during restoration work in 19th century, saxon cross discovered in wall of tower, , blackened stones in tower wall evidence totally destroyed fire after battle of bannockburn in 1314. church contains display of tudor glass, similar of glass in york minster. present building built in 1870s richard norman shaw, , includes ancient coffin slab dating 1340; kirkbeck stone dating 17th century; 15th-century bell hanging in porch; , reredos in caen stone marble panels. church reputedly has heaviest peal of 6 bells in yorkshire, , weigh 7,500 pounds (3,400 kg). old organ, no longer playable, built william hill of london house organ walker joy, prosperous oil merchant in leeds; brother designed hydraulic engine pump bellows, making first ever blown mechanical power. churchyard contains memorial robert poole, gravedigger, consisting of sculptured shovel leaning against tree trunk. grade ii* listed building.
