during 1960s, 1970s , 1980s, subsidized construction of highways , suburbs resulted in drawing off middle , upper classes, urban blight, white flight, , prostitution in of downtown columbus , adjacent neighborhoods. efforts halt gradual deterioration of downtown began saving , restoration of springer opera house in 1965. designated state theatre of georgia, helping spark historic preservation movement in city. has documented , preserved various historic districts in , around downtown.


through late 1960s , 1970s, large residential neighborhoods built accommodate soldiers coming vietnam war , associated ft. benning. these range wesley woods leesburg brittney , willowbrook , high end sears woods , windsor park. large tracts of blighted areas cleaned up. modern columbus consolidated government center constructed in city center. significant period of urban renewal , revitalization followed in mid late 1990s.


with these improvements, residents , businesses have been attracted formerly blighted areas. municipal projects have included construction of softball complex, hosted 1996 olympic softball competition; construction of chattahoochee riverwalk; construction of national civil war naval museum @ port columbus, construction of coca-cola space science center, expansion of columbus museum, , road improvements include new downtown bridge crossing chattahoochee river phenix city. during late 1990s, commercial activity expanded north of downtown along i-185 corridor.
