on 22 january 2010, outgoing president of ukraine yushchenko officially rehabilitated 1 of ukraine s controversial world-war-ii-era figures, ultranationalist leader stepan bandera , awarded him title of hero of ukraine. operating in western region of ukraine known galicia 1930s through 1950s, bandera s military organization adopted authentic nationalist symbols, killed jews , promoted ethnic chauvanism pursue goal of creating independent ukrainian state. yushchenko s decision immeditately caused uproar , condemned european parliament, russian, polish , jewish organizations, , declared illegal following ukrainian government , court decision in april 2010. in january 2011, award officially annulled.


in second round of ukraine s presidential elections yushchenko didn t support either of candidates, victor yanukovych or yulia tymoshenko.


yushchenko attributed low popularity ratings adherence principles. ukraine european democratic country , yushchenko said @ polling station. free nation , free people. in following days, said ukraine doesn’t have decent choice replacement. both candidates alienated national, european, , democratic values. don’t see principal difference between them. however, low approval ratings may attributable tacit support former adversary yanukovych, between rounds 1 , two. yushchenko removed kharkiv , dniproptrovsk governors had expressed support tymoshenko , had refused provide administrative resources yanukovych s campaign.
