Changes since 1775: Namestnichestvo .28Vice royalty.29 Governorate (Russia)



by reform of 1775, subdivision guberniyas , further uyezds (уезды), based on population size, , term guberniya replaced synonym of russian origin: namestnichestvo (наместничество), translated viceroyalty . term guberniya, however, still remained in use. these viceroyalties governed namestniki (наместник) (literal translation: deputy ) or governors general (генерал-губернатор, general-gubernator ). correspondingly, term governorate general (генерал-губернаторство, general-gubernatorstvo ) in use refer actual territory being governed. office of governor general had more administrative power , in higher position previous office of governor. governor general ruled several guberniyas.


by ukase of russian senate of december 31, 1796, office of governorate general demoted previous level of governorate, , russia again divided guberniyas, subdivided uyezds , further subdivided volosts (волость); nevertheless several governorates general made several guberniyas existed until russian revolution of 1917.
