early career in scotland

coyle began senior career dumbarton in 1985 played alongside brothers joe , tommy. in 1988, joined clydebank.


in march 1990 £175,000 transfer took him airdrieonians. move instantly successful, coyle scoring hat-trick on debut , going on finish scottish league s top scorer 1989–90. on next 2 seasons goals helped airdrie promotion, scottish cup final appearance in 1992, , appearance in 1992–93 european cup winners cup (as scottish cup winners rangers won scottish premier division title , qualified uefa champions league).


bolton wanderers

in summer of 1993, bolton wanderers paid £250,000 sign coyle, , two-year spell in england included promotion , brief chance play in fa premier league. key part of division 1 promotion winning side in 1995, scoring 75th-minute goal against reading in playoff final gave bolton lifeline peg scoreline 2–1. 90 minutes on clock, score 2–2 , bolton won 4–3 in time end 15-year exile top flight.


dundee united

however, in october 1995, £400,000 transfer fee took him dundee united, once again part of promotion-winning side, scoring winning goal in time in second leg of playoff against partick thistle.


motherwell , after

coyle s next move motherwell in january 1997, after move hibernian fell through. in march 1999 moved dunfermline athletic. after losing place in pars team, went on loan ross county. rejoined airdrieonians in 2001 , won challenge cup (scoring in final) went liquidation in may 2002.


coyle joined falkirk, being promoted co-player-manager alongside john hughes in 2003. after leaving post returned dundee united, in coaching capacity registering player. lack of first team opportunities, however, led him being loaned out airdrieonians successors, airdrie united; move subsequently made permanent. took post of assistant manager sandy stewart.


post–retirement

he played in emergency burnley reserves on 9 april 2009, scoring lob in 2–0 win against accrington stanley, helping them win reserve league title. on 7 october, coyle played again burnley reserves in 1–0 defeat liverpool reserves @ prenton park.


on 15 november 2010, coyle returned playing action @ age of 44 when turning out bolton in friendly match northern ireland side cliftonville. first time in fifteen years had started game bolton , chipped in goal in 2–0 wanderers win.


international

a former republic of ireland under-21 international, coyle earned 1 full international cap, in friendly match played against netherlands in tilburg in april 1994. match ended in 1–0 victory republic, coyle coming on replace goalscorer tommy coyne in 83rd minute. regarding choice represent ireland, coyle stated ambition play @ highest level possible and, if i’m being totally honest, didn’t , still don’t think have been enough play scotland. irish watched me play 6 or 7 times dumbarton , first game them against scotland.
