in 1887, imperial royal austrian state railways (german: kaiserlich-königliche österreichische staatsbahnen) opened new railway line, trieste–hrpelje railway (german: hrpelje-bahn), new port of trieste hrpelje-kozina, on istrian railway. intended function of new line reduce austrian empire s dependence on südbahn network. opening gave trieste second station south of original one, named trieste sant andrea (german: triest sankt andrea). 2 stations connected railway line in initial plans had interim solution: rive railway (german: rive-bahn), survived until 1981, when replaced galleria di circonvallazione, 5.7-kilometre (3.5 mi) railway tunnel route east of city.


with opening of transalpina railway vienna, austria via jesenice , nova gorica in 1906, st andrea station replaced new, more capacious, facility, named trieste stazione dello stato (german: triest staatsbahnhof), later trieste campo marzio -now railway museum-, , original station came identified trieste stazione della meridionale or trieste meridionale (german: triest südbahnhof). railway approached trieste via villa opicina, took rather shorter loop southwards towards sea front. freight services dock area include container services northern italy , budapest, hungary, rolling highway services salzburg, austria , frankfurt, germany.


passenger rail service trieste consists of trains , venice, connecting there high-speed trains rome , milan @ mestre. there direct trains verona, turin, milan, rome, florence, naples , bologna. these trains reach trieste central station bypassing gulf of trieste, connecting südbahn s northern loop. passenger trains run between villa opicina , ljubljana.


trieste in remote future connected italian tav railway network: 300-kilometre-per-hour (190 mph) fast train route possibly connect trieste venice. however, project not completed earlier 2020.
