biography
early life

ireland born in cleveland ohio. attended university school in shaker heights, ohio , went on prepare college @ taft school in watertown, connecticut. graduated asheville school in north carolina in 1914. 1914-1915 attended phillips andover academy followed studying mining engineering @ yale university. left yale during world war , enlisted in naval reserve flying corps.


career

he had long career m.a. hanna company founded maternal grandfather, howard melville hanna. had long run consolidation coal company. 1920 1924, worked susquehanna collieries company, subsidiary of hanna coal company in pennsylvania. in 1924, returned cleveland , became assistant general manager of scc. worked way in hanna coal , became manager in 1929 followed president in 1931. when consolidation coal company purchased hanna coal, became chairman of executive committee followed vice-chairman of board of directors. retired in 1966.


philanthropy

he active civic leader , active in politics serving on board of directors of several organizations. financially supported arts disliked opera , classical music. first wife , daughter louise great opera enthusiasts. promoted , supported metropolitan opera s annual tour visit cleveland liv played role of announcer bouncer @ high society reception before opera. few minute prior start of opera proceed through reception loud noise maker telling head auditorium. when group had departed, retreat small office , work. prominent figure in local , state republican party , through friend, governor jim rhodes, funding approved ireland cancer center @ university hospitals in memory.


active in civic affairs, served president of board of trustees of hawken school, cleveland, , trustee of st. timothy s school in baltimore, maryland. member of finance committee of day nursery association, chairman of investment committee of visiting nurse association, , member of advisory committee on investments of benjamin rose institute, in cleveland. additionally, member of board of governors of western reserve university, trustee of cleveland zoological society, , chairman of finance committee of university hospitals in cleveland.


plantations , sailing

he avid sportsman , close friend david s. ingalls (1899-1985) , 2 co-owned 2 quail hunting plantations, ring oak plantation , foshalee plantation in leon county, florida north of tallahassee. later divided plantations ireland taking full ownership of foshallee.


he sailing enthusiast series of boats named pandora (i - iv) in cruised east coast of united states , bahamas residence in pemaquid harbor, maine, , nassau harbor club, in nassau, bahamas. member of cruising club of america , competed in bermuda race many times. while in bahamas local guide vivian alvin (old pot)pinder of spanish wells, reputed greatest spear fisherman in bahamas.


personal life

he married margaret allen in 1918 , had 4 children: mrs. louise humphrey, r. livingston iii, melville h., , kate ireland. margaret died october 22, 1961. married, mrs. louise ireland grimes in 1967. had no children. died on april 21, 1981, , buried in lake view cemetery.
