service began on red line (upper) platform on february 6, 1978, , on green line (lower) platform on december 11, 1993. between 1993 , september 1999, fort totten served terminus of northern portion of green line until opening of stations between fort totten , mount vernon square. beginning on december 31, 2006 part of 18-month trial, metro extended yellow line service fort totten station during non-rush hours , weekends. in press release, councilmember jim graham said service change support development , urban lifestyle of neighborhoods between fort totten , mount vernon square stations. part of metro rush plus initiative began in june 2012 , ended in june 2017, several yellow line trains arriving franconia-springfield continued onto greenbelt , vice versa, completing yellow line service full-time between fort totten , mount vernon square.


2009 red line collision

on june 22, 2009, 2 southbound metro trains on red line collided between takoma , fort totten stations, killing 9 , injuring 80, deadliest accident in system s history. plaque inside station s mezzanine commemorates victims of crash. plans in works 1 day create memorial site outside station after current accommodations deemed insensitive victims families.
