from 5th century ad, arrival of first slavic , avar tribes , beginning of break-up of roman empire, area bore witness many noteworthy events. time, fortifications ceased function , new towns built; new settlement named after ribnica river, on banks built, ribnica, established. first mentioned during reign of nemanjić dynasty, part of serbian kingdom. importance of ribnica position crossroads in communications west.

the name podgorica first mentioned in 1326 in court document of kotor archives. city economically strong: trade routes between republic of ragusa , serbia, developed @ time, maintained via road led podgorica through trebinje , nikšić. busy crossroad, podgorica vibrant regional centre of trade , communication. boosted development, economic power, military strength , strategic importance.


the ottoman empire captured podgorica in 1474. podgorica became kaza of sanjak of scutari in 1479. ottomans built large fortress in podgorica, , existing settlement, highly developed merchant connections, became main ottoman defensive , attacking bastion in region. @ beginning of 1474 ottoman sultan intended rebuild podgorica , baleč , settle them 5,000 muslim families (most of slavic or albanian origin), in order stop cooperation between principality of zeta , albania veneta.
