the ninth season of how met mother received positive reviews critics. review aggregation website rotten tomatoes gave 80% approval rating season average rating of 7.3/10, based on 10 reviews. @ end of season, max nicholson of ign gave season negative review, writing: many how met mother fans felt betrayed after watching series finale -- , understandably after season 9 spent 22 of 24 episodes building towards wedding meaningless. in retrospect, other arc have made better foundation season 9, including series finale. in end, unbalanced storytelling, lack of focus , unfunny detours led show s eventual downfall. adam vitcavage of paste magazine gave season lukewarm review, saying nothing over-the-top funny, perfect combination of laughter , sweet moments make of lackluster episodes in past few seasons.
