faculty structure

the faculty structure, according rjies, has following bodies:



faculty council
dean
scientific council
pedagogic council
student council

composition , election of faculty council

the faculty council representative university body composed of 13 members: 8 faculty members or researchers (ana paiva morais, antónio josé duque da silva marques, joão sàágua, margarida acciaiuoli, maria helena trindade lopes, maria regina salvador, nuno severiano teixeira, salwa castelo-branco), 1 student (ana assunção), , 4 external personalities ((francisco pinto balsemão, nazim ahmad, antónio vieira monteiro e francisco seixas da costa). faculty members or researchers elected 4 years (with 1 possible renewal), whereas external individuals, chosen elected counsellors in first meeting, nominated rector.


the faculty council has power to:



elect president, position held francisco pinto balsemão.
elect dean (by absolute majority, among full professors , research coordinators integrate faculty)
evaluate dean’s actions , adopt amendments statutes.
upon proposal dean, adopt medium , long term strategic options, create, change or remove departments, research units or services
make decisions regarding purchase or sale of assets
approve annual plans of activities, budgets , accounts.

the dean

the dean, position held francisco caramelo, elected 4 years , may renewed once through electoral process begins 3 months before mandate expires. dean may designate 4 vice-deans, positions held maria josé roxo, susana trovão , joão soeiro de carvalho, , associate deans cristina ponte e joão figueira de sousa.


the dean responsible guiding , coordinating faculty services, providing them unity, continuity , effectiveness. thus, must represent faculty within , outside institution, ensure compliance statutes , regulations, chair scientific , pedagogic councils (which must implement resolutions), appoint executive coordinators of departments, approve academic calendars, propose creation or elimination of programmes, coordinate faculty support services, conduct administrative , financial management, take initiatives development of faculty, ensure compliance resolutions taken collegiate bodies, , ensure quality of teaching , research of faculty.
