in june 2014, polling in seat of sturt held christopher pyne–a major figure in liberal party–indicated nxt candidate have beaten him 38% 31% in primary vote. before tony abbott replaced malcolm turnbull prime minister following september 2015 liberal leadership ballot. january 2016 opinion poll conducted in south australia roy morgan found nxt ahead of australian labor party, presently opposition party governing liberal party of australia. february poll next south australian election indicated similar amount of support (20.5%), nxt third behind labor. abc election analyst antony green believes nxt attract 10-12% of vote in eastern states. griff believes double dissolution election see many 6 nxt senators elected. 15 january 2016 article in sydney morning herald argued nxt s debut national election had been undermined rise of turnbull. however, polling conducted after change of prime minister indicated nxt support had fallen 0.2% in votes lower house, while support rose 4% in senate.
