at manned spacecraft center in houston, chaffee served capsule communicator (capcom) in march 1965 gemini 3. later year, capcom, along virgil gus grissom , eugene cernan, gemini 4 mission, in edward h. white ii performed first spacewalk american. capcom, chaffee relayed information between crew members , director of flight operations, chris kraft. never got seat on gemini mission, assigned work on flight control, communications, instrumentation, , attitude , translation control systems in apollo program. during time, along grissom, flew chase planes @ altitude of between 30,000 , 50,000 feet (9,100 , 15,200 m) take motion pictures of launch of unmanned saturn 1b rocket.
