retirement home horses

retirement home horses @ mill creek farm non-profit equine sanctuary located in alachua, florida. sanctuary provides lifelong care horses have been neglected, abused or unwanted , destined slaughter. “retirees” live in spacious, tree-lined pastures can roam freely other horses. peter , mary gregory created 265-acre sanctuary in 1984. land protected perpetual conservation easement prevents land being developed, ensuring retirement home horses @ mill creek farm sanctuary horses in need. there 130 horses retired @ farm.


hogtown creek greenway

a 900-acre area of lowland, creeks, , tributaries protected alachua county conservation trust in partnership city of gainesville, act preparing florida communities trust application , acting acquisition agent under contract city. visitors hogtown creek greenway can experience array of activities including nature trails , picnic areas. greenway connects loblolly environmental facility, encompasses 49 acres , includes restrooms , parking. access hogtown off of nw 8th avenue, between nw 34th street , nw 22nd street, across westside park. greenway can accessed loblolly environmental facility, located @ 3315 nw 5th avenue, on east side of ne 34th street between west university avenue , nw 8th avenue.


historic haile homestead

the historic haile homestead @ kanapaha plantation former 1,500-acre sea island cotton plantation. enslaved craftsmen haile family completed 6,200 square foot homestead in 1856. homestead stands today 1 of few remaining antebellum homes in north central florida. unique feature of homestead “talking walls”. haile family wrote on walls of home – on 12,500 words in every room , closet.

lake tuscawilla preserve/ tuscawilla prairie

formerly cattle ranch, 600 acre preserve has returned prairie/marsh lake system surrounded prairie hammock. lake tuscawilla preserve came under act’s management through $3 million in grants florida communities trust, fish , wildlife service, , donations private landowners , project supporters. preserve home alligators, amphibians, fish, , small mammals. provides key habitat wading , migrating birds, including sandhill cranes, great egrets, herons, ducks, sparrows, , white-faced ibises, opening celebration of tuscawilla preserve october 30, 2009. north rim of preserve across road micanopy’s native american heritage park, , open public. resource-based recreation available on property , activities include trail walking, birdwatching, wildflower viewing, , picnicking public. environmental education classes held @ tuscawilla preserve both adults (see education , public participation) , children (see tuscawilla learning center).


lochloosa wildlife management area (lwma)

alachua conservation trust facilitated protection of on 27,000 acres in lochloosa forest , lochloosa lake resubmitting proposal florida conservation , recreation lands (carl), florida forever. property managed florida fish , wildlife conservation commission , st. john water management district. lwma protects watershed quality, pine plantation, , water , live oak ridges. management area provides habitat @ least eighteen listed species, including florida black bear, fox squirrel, eastern indigo snake, wood stork, , sand hill crane. gopher tortoises, bobcats, white-tailed deer, opossums, wild hogs, , wild turkeys can found within lwma


the lochloosa wildlife management area provides numerous opportunities resource-based recreation. activities include seasonal hunting, fishing, hiking, bicycling, horseback riding, canoeing, wildlife viewing, , primitive camping in designated areas. area site of great florida birding trail, 2,000-mile, self-guided highway trail designed conserve , enhance florida s wildlife habitats promoting bird watching , wildlife viewing activities, conservation education , economic opportunity
