ras lanouf part of greek pentapolis colonies. traditional western boundary of pentapolis lay @ arae philaenorum. historians claim 40 km west of el agheila, while others place arae philaenorum near ra s lanuf, , modern italian commemorative arch recording philaeni stood here before destruction in 1973.


world war ii

on 3 april 1941 there british war communiqué in north africa campaign in world war ii in night of 1 april 1941 allied bomber aircraft heavily attacked german/italian motor transport @ ra s lanuf , destroyed many vehicles.


growth under gaddafi

beginning in 1984, major urban development program ra s lanuf initiated brega , ra s lanuf higher committee accommodate employees of nearby oil industries, , envisaged 40,000 inhabitants. general design of town layout linear, following coast , allowing extensive views , easy physical connection sea parts of town.


the town s structure based on functional hierarchy, containing 3 centers forming public zones community facilities extending mediterranean coast; these in turn surrounded high-rise housing blocks. pedestrian route links different public, commercial, , recreational facilities residential areas. project carried out devecon engineers , architects.


libyan civil war

on 4 march 2011 after heavy fighting, anti-gaddafi libyan rebels captured ra s lanuf. rebel advance halted in battle of bin jawad , counter-offensive government forces opened second phase of battle of ra s lanuf. after heavy bombardment air, land, , sea government forces retook city on 10 march. on 27 march rebels retook control of ra s lanuf part of rapid advance 24 hours earlier had retaken strategic towns of brega , ajdabiya, within matter of days rebel forces retreated city once more in face of new government counter-offensive. on 23 august, rebels recaptured ra s lanuf government loyalists , continued advance towards bin jawad , sirte; however, sporadic fighting continued in ra s lanuf september.
