mileage-based exit numbers

the first change exit numbers along new england thruway section of interstate 95 in april 1980 when section converted sequential exits.

as part of experiment, i-95 1 of few roads in new york receive mileage-based exit numbers. implemented on both port authority section , nysdot section of highway (exits 1a through 8c). thruway section (which had carried own sequential exit numbers) renumbered thruway authority system of sequential numbers starting 9 (where mileage-based system left off). led situation in exits 1 through 8 mileage based (all 1 of contained lettered suffixes result) , exits 9 through 22 sequential.

around 2005, nysdot began project renumber i-95 sequential numbers throughout. idea never got traction 3 agencies. port authority did complete renumbering on section of road. nysdot renumbered 1 section of road in parkchester. meanwhile, thruway authority did not renumber of exits on stretch of road. led situation 2005 through 2012 in exits signed 2 different numbers, while numbers repeated twice, on of signs.

finally, in 2012, nysdot restored mileage-based numbers portion of highway, once again line thruway portion. has eliminated of exit number conflicts, 1 exception. exception exists because port authority has not changed numbers on portion of road creating confusing situation @ amsterdam avenue exit, maintained nysdot southbound port authority northbound. exit signed exit 1b southbound (which proper number within mileage-based), exit 2 northbound (a holdover failed renumbering project).
