Novel reprints Spider (pulp fiction)

many of original 119 spider pulp magazine novels have been reprinted on years in both mass-market paperback , trade paperback editions.

berkley books (then berkley/medallion) first reprinted spider in 1969 , 1970, intending reprint 118 novels in order, hoping tap reprint phenomenon of doc savage novels being published bantam books. however, these first paperback reissues met poor sales after 4 volumes, , planned series canceled.

in mid-1970s, pocket books reprinted 4 spider novels, featuring modern pulp cover artwork robert a. maguire. in series, spider portrayed non-costumed, heavily-armed muscular blond hero. these paperbacks failed find audience, , series canceled. seems these 4 novels edited , modernized reprints, 1 of several reasons why may have never caught on intended audience. in one, death , spider (originally published in 1940), nita van sloan shown driving jaguar e-type x-ke, sports car not created or on streets until 1961, 19 years later.

at same time in england, mews books/new american library reprinted 4 spider novels sporting new cover artwork, each different in style , execution used pocket books. spider mass market series ended after 4 titles had been published.

then, 3 years later, in 1979, unusual spider publishing event happened right out of blue . python publishing put print never-before-published last original spider novel, slaughter, inc., have been published spider pulp magazine #119. python published one-shot mass market paperback. copyright reasons character names changed, , novel retitled blue steel ( ultimate answer evil ). spider recast title character, blue steel. pocket book s spider editions, paperback sported modern pulp cover painting featuring similar, non-costumed, heavily armed blond hero (that cover appears unused cover painting artist george gross, finished never used freeway press reprint of pulp magazine character operator #5).

a year later, in 1980, dimedia, inc. reprinted 3 spider pulp novels in larger trade paperback format. in 1984, continued 3 mass market spider novel reprints, 1 in 1984 , 2 in 1985. these last 3 sported new cover paintings of original costumed spider fantasy artist ken kelly.

in 1990s, carroll & graf publishers issued series of 8 mass market spider paperbacks, each 1 in double-novel format. used original spider pulp magazine artwork covers. these 16 novels became longest running spider reprint series done mass market paperback book market. 1 cover newly-painted version rafael desoto, original artist.

after carol & graf, several specialized small press pulp reprint houses tried complete reprinting of spider series. bold venture press published 8 issues of spider. wildside press offered 1 spider reprint.

girasol collectibles has been dogged of them all. has reissued novels both series of single pulp novel facsimile editions re-typeset stories in pulp double trade paperbacks. both series use spider pulp magazine artwork covers. every spider novel has been put print part of girasol s ambitious program.

in 2007, new york science fiction publisher baen books published single trade paperback featuring 3 spider novel reprints. in 2008, released second companion trade paperback of spider reprints. in 2009, baen issued both volumes mass market paperbacks. 1 of 3 novels in second omnibus stars popular publications pulp character, octopus. baen editions sported new spider cover paintings noted graphic designer , comics artist jim steranko. steranko had illustrated 27 of 28 covers [mobsmen on spot used george rozen cover original pulp run] 23 1970s mass-market reprint volumes of [he did 2nd covers 5 of titles 2nd printings] rival pulp hero shadow, published pyramid books , hbj/jove books.

in late 2009, doubleday s science fiction book club reprinted in hardcover baen s second spider three-in-one volume previous year. became first spider hardcover edition ever published.

in august 2009, age of aces reprinted spider s black police trilogy in single volume.

also in 2009, moonstone books published original anthology of brand new spider short stories entitled spider chronicles.

facsimile spider novels continue appear in print other publishers; have been issued in kindle e-book format.
