the board

the board consists of range of academic, physical, mental , aptitude tests assessing suitability future employment. potential officers royal marines required undertake potential officers course @ commando training centre royal marines (ctcrm) @ lympstone , aircrew candidates have taken flying aptitude tests @ raf cranwell prior attending aib.


each board presided on board president (a captain or commander) assisted lieutenant commander , lieutenant (or royal marine equivalents). each board considers syndicate of 4 candidates , 3 concurrent boards ongoing. each board supported senior rating or senior nco, responsible administration , briefing of candidates


candidates arrive @ aib complex on evening prior commencement. following site briefing there opportunity candidates meet peers , establish relationships required on course of assessment.


day one

the first day on board predominantly taken academic testing exploring candidate s intellectual , practical abilities. areas assessed include verbal , non-verbal reasoning, numerical ability, speed , accuracy, spatial orientation, , service knowledge. after these completed, candidates given 45 minutes write essay on subject chosen prescribed list, assessment of written powers of communication.


upon completion of these tests candidates presented sample planning exercise, simpler version of exercise complete subsequently. after being briefed on conducted gymnasium briefed on practical leadership tasks; practical techniques, equipment familiarisation, , health , safety issues.


the day completes multi-stage fitness assessment, determine fitness, motivation , determination.


day two

the second day assessed board president , staff through observation , interview.


each candidate lead practical leadership task in gymnasium. syndicates attempt tasks selected range of scenarios; load carries across chasms or pools using supplied equipment.


the assessed planning exercise undertaken under assessed condition. syndicate given short period study scenario, problem introduced must overcome. candidates discuss possible courses of action group, presenting group plan board. each candidate questioned on scenario , group plan. after this, each candidate presents individual plan arrived @ on own, may or may not same group plan, depending on flaws questioning turned up.


the final task interview. here, on period of thirty minutes, candidates interviewed past achievements, experiences of difficulty overcome, , examined motivations in joining naval service.


outcome

candidates given outcome of assessment before being released. based on score achieved candidates may have reached required standard, required reassessed following period of 12 months or considered not-suitable.


notwithstanding outcome candidates marginal scores may not meet required performance threshold loaded onto training @ britannia royal naval college in dartmouth. in cases candidates not reaching required score preferred branch may offered alternative. candidate meets required score consideration , not offered training place required re-present @ aib after 12 months.
