after period of illness, died @ home, 10 bedford square, london on 8 september 1874. more 1,000 people attended funeral @ friends burial ground, winchmore hill. left wife (except 50 guineas several persons), , after death, daughter, mrs anna crouch pigott.


at by-election, following death, charles george merewether (conservative) elected northampton constituency, gilpin had represented seventeen years.


the last executions in united kingdom, hanging, took place in 1964, although not applied since, death penalty remained on statute book other offences until 1998.


in 1968, duke university bought large quantity of charles gilpin s papers, catalogued , available scholars.
