the large influx of sudanese refugees in egypt beginning in late 1990s led increase in rent prices , higher cost of living refugees social tensions between natives , sudanese not experienced during past influxes in 1980s. increased rent prices burdened sudanese refugees particularly because must pay more expensive furnished flats, unlike natives have right own property.


many refugees unable afford rent prices in cairo live in dismal conditions of cairo’s destitute neighborhoods or in impoverished areas on outskirts of city. refugee families tend share apartments defray cost of rent overcrowding , frequent visits of family members, common in sudanese culture, has led tension between sudanese tenants , egyptian landlords. moreover, single women , mothers tend face discrimination when seeking housing since many egyptian landlords prefer renting two-parent households due social stigma.
