dorian s lifeboat smallest of ship s boats and, 26 crew , 5 passengers on board, had few inches of freeboard. in worsening weather, dorian improvised rough sea anchor, enabled boat ride waves through night , following day without being swamped. in late afternoon of september 28 sighted distant sail, proved canadian bark huron, bound quebec. rowed towards rescuer, passed peter mccabe, still clinging makeshift raft, 1 of 72 occupants have survived night; he, taken on board huron. mccabe later recalled thought within ten minutes of death when rescued.


on following day huron encountered sailing ship, lebanon, heading new york. dorian, 5 passengers , twelve of crew chose transfer lebanon. other crewmen, possibly anticipating hostile reception in home port, chose remain huron , proceed quebec, arrived on october 13.


the ordeal of captain luce, , others survived on assorted wreckage, lasted 2 days. around noon on september 29, sailing ship cambria, out of glasgow , heading quebec, spotted françois jassonet, vesta fisherman had been rescued arctic after collision. in following few hours, cambria picked 9 more survivors; these included luce , 2 companions, survivors of eleven had found refuge on remains of paddlebox. last picked cambria james smith, businessman scotland, had survived on raft constructed planking , tin-lined wicker basket. had seen @ least 1 ship pass in distance during ordeal, , had given hope when cambria arrived. once satisfied there no further survivors in area, cambria continued journey quebec. luce spent of voyage preparing report of disaster, ready wire edward collins in new york reached land. cambria arrived in quebec on october 13, few hours after huron.


the fates of 3 of arctic s lifeboats unknown: starboard quarter boat in gourlay left assist vesta after collision; port guard boat, launched under control of quartermaster; , forward deck boat, appropriated rogers , associates. no trace of occupants of these boats ever found. in mid-november 1854, gourlay s empty boat picked schooner lily dale, in condition , oars still inside. in mid-december port guard boat washed ashore @ placentia bay, newfoundland, again no indication of fate of occupants.
