education , academic experiences

over 5 years 1967-1972, schibler pursued study of biology, biochemistry, , chemistry @ university of bern, approximately seventy kilometers hometown of olten. @ graduation, awarded diploma in biology. afterwards, continued education there, receiving phd diploma latin honors in 1975 work on ribosomal rna in context of vertebrate evolution. obtained postdoctoral fellowship swiss national science foundation , worked @ laboratory of robert perry, based @ fox chase cancer center in philadelphia 2 years. in 1978, became junior group leader @ swiss institute experimental cancer research. in 1981, promoted status of group leader tenure, remained 3 years. finally, in 1984, obtained full professorship @ department of molecular biology @ university of geneva, resides.

serendipitous discovery

schibler thrust world of chronobiology on single chance discovery. while examining transcription of serum albumin gene in liver, discovered dna binding protein (dbp) albumin promoter happened rhythmic in expression. while thought underlying mechanism rhythmic secretion of hormones, became clear rhythmic expression of dbp driven instead cell-autonomous oscillators entrained master clock in suprachiasmatic nucleus (scn). schibler , colleagues followed line of inquiry field of chronobiology.

current research

a timing system circadian clocks closely related behaviors in mammals. schibler doing researches on how biological clock works. schibler research team in university of geneva have developed technique called synthetic tandem repeat promoter (star-prom) screening can assist identify transcription factors , functions in peripheral cells figure out how circadian gene expression governed rhythmically regulatory mechanisms in cultured cells.
