located on coconino plateau, few miles west of aubrey cliffs rise on 6,100 feet (1,900 m) above sea level, caverns lie within alluvial plain @ elevation of 5,300 feet (1,600 m). limestone comprises majority of subsurface area of vicinity of coconino plateau, area riddled numerous cavernous veins run miles in directions.
