discovery carried 8 secondary payloads, including 2 shuttle student involvement program experiments. 1 student experiment, using 4 live rats tiny pieces of bone removed bodies, test whether environmental effects of space flight inhibit bone healing. other student experiment fly 32 chicken eggs determine effects of space flight on fertilized chicken embryos.


one experiment, mounted in payload bay, termed partially successful. space station heat pipe advanced radiator element, potential cooling system planned space station freedom, operated continuously less 30 minutes under powered electrical loads. failure blamed on faulty design of equipment, manifold section.


all other experiments operated successfully. crystals obtained proteins in protein crystal growth experiment. chromosomes , plant cell division in space (chromex), life sciences experiment, designed show effects of microgravity on root development. imax (70 mm) camera used film variety of scenes imax film blue planet, including effects of floods, hurricanes, wildfires , volcanic eruptions on earth. ground-based air force experiment used orbiter calibration target air force maui optical site (amos) in hawaii.
