the town center or poblacion of jasaan picture of spanish catholic concept of settlement model– bajo de las campanas –where people live around vicinity of church within earshot of peal of bells. there used bell @ belfry of nuestra senora de la inmaculada concepcion church, peal heard far hills of natubo.
this town center used 1 big poblacion, subdivided 9 puroks (hamlets): purok uno, purok dos, purok tres, purok cuatro, purok cinco, purok seis, purok siete, purok ocho, , purok nueve. in 1960s, these villages adopted names, such siga-siga, mauswagon , mabuligon, etc.
in 1970s, when martial law in force, then-president ferdinand marcos (by series of presidential decrees) made barangay basic political unit of philippines. centro, used known, split upper jasaan , lower jasaan. local residents refer these 2 ubos , ibabaw, vernacular indication of geographical location in slope: ubos being lower, , ibabaw being upper. despite partition of poblacion 2 barangays, old village identifications–the purok–are still referred in present jasaan.
jasaan town plaza example of separation of church , state property. road runs through middle of plaza, making demarcation line. portion fronting centuries-old church belongs roman catholic church, , on portion on other side of road owned local government of jasaan.
