the new vehicle, t-62, equipped new smoothbore design - allows higher velocity , greater armour penetration kinetic rounds - based on enlargement of 100mm 2a19 anti-tank gun had entered production in 1955. new weapon, designated u-5t, penetrate 300mm of vertical rha @ 1000 metres , re-established comfortable penetration capacity against western armor.


though t-62 have variable success in conflicts involved in u-5ts remain formidable weapon proved capable of penetrating armour of comparable nato tank until deployment of third generation mbts in late 1970s , 80s. proven examination of iranian chieftain , m60s knocked out iraqi t-62s during iran-iraq war. these examinations led development of add-on armour packages such stillbrew try counter u-5ts.
