on 28 october 1914, battle of penang occurred, during imperial german navy cruiser, sms emden, covertly sailed george town , sank imperial russian navy cruiser, zhemchug. french navy destroyer, mousquet, set off in pursuit, before being sunk sms emden off northwestern tip of penang island. 147 french , russian sailors perished, while survivors rescued local malay fishermen.
