his detective novels largely set in foreign locations, in 1970s moved more familiar italian locales, notably in mamma lupara ( mother shotgun ) published in 1972, , in series of books federico sartori. franco enna came known writer provincialised italian crime fiction. italo calvino , alberto savinio had said italian countryside not background thriller. enna used format of detective novel opportunity show view of world. sicily became perfect setting tell stories filled intrigue , steeped in passion.
