columbus 1 of georgia s 3 fall line cities, along augusta , macon. fall line hilly lands of piedmont plateau meet flat terrain of coastal plain. such, columbus has varied landscape of rolling hills on north side , flat plains on south. fall line causes rivers in area decline rapidly towards sea level. textile mills established here in 19th , 20th centuries take advantage of water power falls. columbus developed along chattahoochee river.


interstate 185 runs east of city, access exits 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 10, 12, , 14 city. interstate 185 runs north 96 mi (154 km) atlanta. u.s. route 27, u.s. route 280, , georgia state route 520 (known south georgia parkway) meet in interior of city. u.s. route 80 runs north of city, locally known j.r. allen parkway; alternate u.s. route 27 , georgia state route 85 run northeast city, locally known bill heard expressway.

midtown residential , commercial area; several historic districts have been designated. location of corporate headquarters of aflac.
north columbus, called northside, diverse suburban area, home established neighborhoods , subdivisions, such green island hills , oldtown. has multiple shopping , lifestyle areas.
south columbus situated below midtown region, , directly north of fort benning. site of national infantry museum, honoring history of infantry forces in u.s. army. museum located here in effort introduce jobs , attract visitors stimulate variety of activities. little business development, section has had poverty , associated crime. has had bars, honky tonks, , other businesses appeal young male soldiers fort benning.
