the great-billed heron large bird, typically standing 115 cm (45 in) tall , weighing 2.6 kg (5.7 lb). larger purple heron, resembles in appearance, although larger , darker. plumage largely dark grey above. in flight, has uniform dark grey upperwing.


the flight slow, neck retracted. characteristic of herons , bitterns, , distinguishes them storks, cranes , spoonbills, extend necks. species feeds in shallow water, spearing fish long, sharp bill. wait motionless prey, or stalk victim.
