the datsun 280zx turbo tony adamowicz drove 1983 imsa gto championship.


it during time in washington dc adamowicz took auto racing. started racing volvo pv 544 in neighbouring maryland in 1963. later contested under 2-liter class of 1968 trans-am championship in porsche 911, raced in can-am series , formula a/formula 5000, winning 1969 scca continental championship. had opportunity race in 1970 indianapolis 500, during first lap of qualifying attempt in eagle-offy yellow light shown , adamowicz slowed. however, yellow error , adamowicz ordered continue other 3 laps. first lap, 6 mph (9.7 km/h) slower others, dragged down average point bumped field. got in car crashed in practice before having chance requalify.


adamowicz returned sports cars, racing transam in autodynamics dodge challenger teammate sam posey, achieving second place in 1971 24 hours of daytona in ferrari 512s, shared ronnie bucknum, , third place in 1971 24 hours of le mans sam posey in 512m after decline of can , f5000 formulas, moved imsa series , won 1981 gtu championship in electramotive nissan 280zx , 1982 , 1983 gto championships in electramotive 280zx-t.


he returned prototypes in 1984 had little success @ level , retired after 1989 24 hours of daytona. competed in select vintage races in same 1969-model eagle racing car in won 1969 scca continental championship. car owned doug magnon, founder of riverside international automotive museum, , prepared mechanic bill losee. bears identical livery carried in 1969. eagle had been parked after 1969 season, , not run again until following restoration in 2008, adamowicz remained driver have driven car.


adamowicz inducted national polish-american sports hall of fame in 2016.
