in 1993, letoya luckett joined knowles, latavia roberson, , kelly rowland complete houston-based r&b group, destiny s child. roles of group consisted knowles lead vocalist, rowland second-lead vocalist plus alongside roberson , luckett background vocalists roberson alto (and spokesperson) adding low notes , luckett soprano adding high notes group s harmony, occasional leads too. after being signed , later dropped elektra records, group signed columbia records in 1997, not before signing mathew knowles group s manager (and beyoncé knowles father). according e! television special, boulevard of broken dreams, knowles forced girls sign him before sign label. luckett s mother requested contracts reviewed attorney, knowles denied request. however, luckett signed him , joined group. after graduating houston club scene, group opened established acts such dru hill, swv, , immature, , released 1998 self-titled debut album destiny s child. album spawned 2 singles: platinum no, no, no part ii (featuring wyclef jean) , me . subsequently, group made on soundtrack album of romantic comedy why fools fall in love song on bus (featuring timbaland), , later toured opening act on tlc s fanmail tour , christina aguilera s debut tour.


in 1999, group released second album, writing s on wall. album became 1 of biggest selling albums released female group, , certified 8 times platinum in usa. opposed first album, luckett had more contribution second album in terms of co-writing. album spawned 4 hit singles: bills, bills, bills , bug boo , name , , jumpin jumpin . 2 singles bills, bills, bills , name nominated grammy awards, name won in 2 different categories. album had been released in houston special edition included bonus track luckett sung lead in alongside other members entitled can t myself .


in late 1999, in midst of group s success , rise, luckett , roberson asserted wanted own manager because of increasing lack of communication manager mathew knowles. pair said never wanted fire knowles, wanted secure outside management represent them. after, luckett , roberson found ostracized knowles family , group s management. when music video name debuted in february 2000, replaced 2 new members, michelle williams , farrah franklin. luckett , roberson filed lawsuit against mathew knowles, beyoncé knowles , kelly rowland, charging them breach of partnership , fiduciary duties, , sought unspecified damages. luckett , roberson withdrew case against beyoncé , kelly, continued sue mathew knowles. case settled, luckett , roberson receiving royalties contributions founding members of group. shortly following release of destiny s child s survivor, luckett , roberson filed lawsuit against group in march 2002. claimed album s lead single, survivor , violated previous settlement due lyrics.
