al-mastumah near site of iron age settlement of astamaku (also known tell mastuma). astamaku 5 kilometres south of town of idlib. of 90 cities assyrian king shalmaneser iii claimed have conquered in aramaean kingdom of hamath, astamaku 1 mentioned name on balawat gates. city fortified , taken on in 848 bce force of assyrian archers according images on gates. farthest city in hamath shalmaneser conquered during military campaign. border settlement had streets , small dwellings suggest town had governor housed small families of members of garrison.
