when u.s.s. president lincoln attacked , sunk german submarine u-90, on may 21, 1918, lt. izac captured , held prisoner on board u-90 until return of submarine germany, when confined in prison camp. during stay on u-90 obtained information of movements of german submarines important determined escape, view making information available u.s. , allied naval authorities. in attempting carry out plan, jumped through window of rapidly moving train @ imminent risk of death, not nature of act fire of armed german soldiers guarding him. having been recaptured , reconfined, lt. izac made second , successful attempt escape, breaking way through barbed-wire fences , deliberately drawing fire of armed guards in hope of permitting others escape during confusion. made way through mountains of southwestern germany, having raw vegetables food, , @ end, swam river rhine during night in immediate vicinity of german sentries.
