time: 63bc during conflict between rome , pontus

prologue

mitridate, having suffered heavy defeat in battle, presumed dead. false news passed arbate, governor, aspasia (mitridate s fiancée) , farnace , sifare (mitridate s sons).


act 1

scene 1


arbate, governor of nymphæum, welcomes sifare. learn sifare resents brother, farnace, because of brother’s strong ties enemies, romans. arbate pledges loyalty sifare. aspasia pleads sifare against advances farnace. accepts plea , reveals love her.


scene 2


farnace makes advances aspasia. refuses, supported sifare, protects forceful brother. news arrives mitridate alive , approaching city. arbate urges brothers conceal differences , greet father. brothers agree hide feelings aspasia. farnace conspires marzio, roman legionary officer, against mitridate.


scene 3


mitridate arrives on shores of nymphæaum princess ismene, daughter of ally king of parthia. mitridate wants farnace marry ismene, promised bride. ismene in love farnace senses problems , worried future. arbate tells mitridate farnace pursuing aspasia, not mentioning sifare. jealous mitridate swears revenge on farnace.


act 2

scene 1


farnace scorns , threatens ismene. tells mitridate, suggests should marry sifare. mitridate asks aspasia immediate marriage hesitates, proving him unfaithful. aspasia confesses love sifare both agree part save honour. sifare plans leave , aspasia troubled conflict between love , duty.


scene 2


mitridate aware of farnace s plot against him romans; plans revenge, despite marzio’s offer of peace, , arrests farnace execute him. ismene rescues prince, admits treachery implicates sifare. mitridate tricks aspasia admitting love sifare , swears revenge. aspasia , sifare wish die together, in fear of mitridate’s threats.


act 3

scene 1


ismene, still in love farnace, tries convince mitridate forgive aspasia. romans attack , mitridate leaves battle. aspasia contemplates suicide poison. sifare wants die, , joins father in battle.


scene 2


marzio liberates farnace , promises him rule of nymphæum. farnace changes mind, deciding side mitridate.


scene 3


defeated, mitridate commits suicide, avoiding captivity. before dies gives blessing sifare , aspasia , forgives farnace, agrees marry ismene. 4 pledge free world rome.
