county established , growth
the town of fort stockton began near fort stockton army post @ comanche springs st. gall, texas renamed fort stockton, texas in 1880. pecos county established texas legislature in 1871 out of presidio county. in 1971, pecos county organized , st. gall (which renamed fort stockton) named county seat. there 1,100 people living in county year. 1890 county had 227 cattle , 150 sheep year, , 1,300 acres (5.3 km) planted in corn. 1900 area s economy had become dominated cattle , sheep ranching, though plots of wheat, rye, corn, , oats grown. around 1900, small settlement known sheffield sprang in eastern pecos county on land owned sheffield , served supply point surrounding ranches. in 1913, construction of kansas city, mexico , orient railway across pecos county caused boom in land speculation , community growth, did irrigation projects along pecos river. town of girvin, named rancher john h. girvin, grew around train stop on kansas city, mexico , orient railway served cattle shipping point. construction of texas state highway 290 linking fort stockton big bend national park gave boost tourism dollar. in 1980s economy of pecos county continued based on farming, ranching, oil , gas production, , tourism. yates oil field in crockett county, texas , pecos county in 1927 resulted in financial boom period county. towns such red barn, iraan (combination of names ira , ann yates) , bakersfield rose in response oil-related employment opportunities. population of county more doubled during 1920s. oil production helped stabilize local economy.

the town of iraan, texas prides on being birthplace of cartoon caveman alley oop , when creator v.t. hamlin worked in oilfields. although first published in des moines register in 1932, hamilin claimed have originated idea while watched dinosaur bones being dug oil equipment. visitors iraan, texas can visit alley oop museum found on alley oop lane. fort stockton pays tribute agile roadrunner paisano pete roadrunner statue.
