kenya, according 2008 report joint united nations programme on hiv/aids, had third largest number of individuals in sub-saharan africa living hiv. had highest prevalence rate of country outside of southern africa. kenya s hiv infection rate dropped around 14 percent in mid-1990s 5 percent in 2006, rose again 6.2 percent 2011. number of newly infected people per year, however, decreased 30 percent, 140,000 in 2001 100,000 in 2011.


as of 2012, nyanza province had highest hiv prevalence rate @ 13.9 percent, north eastern province having lowest rate @ 0.9 percent.


christian men , women had higher infection rate muslim counterparts. discrepancy marked among women, muslim women showing rate of 2.8 percent versus 8.4 percent among protestant women , 8 percent among catholic women. hiv more common among wealthiest among poorest (7.2 percent versus 4.6 percent).


historically, hiv had been more prevalent in urban rural areas, although gap closing rapidly. men in rural areas more hiv-infected (at 4.5 percent) in urban areas (at 3.7 percent).
