in 1971, walter coombs concluded there 1 species of ankylosaurid during campanian age of late cretaceous of north america. synonymised species anodontosaurus lambei, dyoplosaurus acutosquameus, , scolosaurus cutleri euoplocephalus tutus. synonymisation of anodontosaurus lambei , euoplocephalus tutus accepted , cmn 8530 assigned e. tutus. however, following redescription of dyoplosaurus valid genus arbour et al. (2009), victoria arbour (2010) argued anodontosaurus valid taxon , distinct euoplocephalus. according study, published abstract, anodontosaurus differs euoplocephalus in distinctive skull , cervical half ring ornamentation, tail club morphology, including presence of pointed, triangular knob osteoderms in anodontosaurus. furthermore, arbour (2010) suggested reassign horseshoe canyon formation ankylosaurine specimens euoplocephalus anodontosaurus. validity of anodontosaurus accepted in 2 subsequent studies. first, published paul penkalski , william t. blows in 2013, re-validated scolosaurus well. second study, penkalski (2013), named , described oohkotokia montana on basis of remains thought referable euoplocephalus. penkalski (2013) performed small phylogenetic analysis of ankylosaurine specimens. anodontosaurus specimen included in analysis holotype. anodontosaurus placed in polytomy holotype of euoplocephalus , specimens referred it, while oohkotokia placed in clade dyoplosaurus, , specimens thought represent either dyoplosaurus or scolosaurus. following cladogram based on 2015 phylogenetic analysis of ankylosaurinae conducted arbour , currie:
