nick griffin , mark collett leave leeds crown court on 10 november 2006 after being found not guilty of charges of incitement racial hatred @ retrial.
on 14 december 2004, griffin arrested @ home in wales, on suspicion of incitement racial hatred, on remarks made islam in undercover bbc documentary titled secret agent. questioned @ police station in halifax, west yorkshire, before being freed on police bail. said arrest electoral scam muslim block vote labour party , labour government attempting influence results of following year s general election.
griffin s arrest made 2 days after of john tyndall , several other people, on remarks had made in same programme. following broadcast on 15 july 2004, police began investigation programme s contents. following april charged 4 offences of using words or behaviour intended or stir racial hatred. trial began in january 2006. griffin stood alongside fellow party activist mark collett, faced similar charges. prosecuting, rodney jameson qc told jury of 6 speeches accused had made in reservoir tavern in keighley on 19 january 2004. reading excerpts them, claimed included threatening, abusive , insulting words directed @ people of asian ethnicity , intention of stirring racial hatred .
griffin accused of calling murdered black teenager stephen lawrence drug dealer , bully stole younger pupils dinner money. in witness box defended himself quoting passages qur an, saying comments describing islam vicious, wicked faith attacking not race, religion. during two-week trial used laptop post daily updates on blog on bnp s website. in closing address, defence barrister timothy king qc said:
the british national party legal, political entity. has right in democratic society put forward ideas , policies might find uncomfortable , might find offensive. there has been tendency in case over-analyse speeches, take 1 line here , 1 line there. have got @ overall impact of these speeches—remember context of each speech.
griffin , collett cleared of half charges against them—the jury remained divided on other charges, , retrial ordered. on 10 november 2006, after 5 hours of deliberations, jury cleared them of charges. met outside court 200 supporters, griffin addressed megaphone. attacked tony blair , bbc, , defended bnp s right freedom of speech. bnp deputy chairman simon darby later claimed had griffin been convicted, bnp leader planned go on hunger strike.
