the collegiate women came high nobility. thorn had belonged benedictine order originally. changed, however, in 12th century, free secular ladies abbey. in 1310, secular cannons of abbey stressed secular status , claimed never have been benedictine.


in 18th century, collegiate ladies were, in principle, required reside in abbey year, except @ 6 weeks per year. however, 600 florins, ladies buy free. in theory, free ladies still required provide 6 weeks of choral service; not observed in practice. ladies held positions in several abbeys. possibility of buying freedom appears have been used frequently. maria josepha of hatzfeld , gleichen, example, member of abbeys @ thorn , essen 46 years. during time, resided in essen abbey 4 years, never in thorn.


the abbey district contained curia building deachoness , 5 house ladies. in 14th century, new gothic abbey church built. of ladies built houses outside abbey district.
