the name ouagadougou dates 15th century when ninsi tribes inhabited area. in constant conflict until 1441 when wubri, yonyonse hero , important figure in burkina faso s history, led tribe victory. renamed area kumbee-tenga , ninsi had called it, wage sabre soba koumbem tenga , meaning head war chief s village . ouagadougou francophone spelling of name.


the city became capital of mossi empire in 1441 , permanent residence of mossi emperors (moro-naba) 1681. moro-naba ceremony still performed every friday moro-naba , court. french made ouagadougou capital of upper volta territory (basically same area contemporary independent burkina faso) in 1919. in 1954 railroad line ivory coast reached city. population of ouagadougou doubled 1954 1960 , has been doubling every ten years since.


2016 aqim , al-mourabitoun attacks

on 15 january 2016, gunmen armed heavy weapons attacked cappuccino restaurant , splendid hotel in heart of ouagadougou. 28 people killed, while @ least 56 wounded; total of 176 hostages released after government counter-attack next morning siege ended. 3 perpetrators killed.
