trieste s maritime location , former long term status part of austrian and, between 1867–1918, austro-hungarian empires made port of trieste major commercial port of landlocked areas of central europe. in 19th century, new port district known porto nuovo built northeast city centre.


there significant commercial shipping container terminal, steel works , oil terminal, located south of city centre. after many years of stagnation, change in leadership placed port on steady growth path, recording 40% increase in shipping traffic of 2007.
